“People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within.”

Oblique Strategy: Work at a different speed
I was driving up to McKinney for a photowalk, taking the route up the eastern side of the city. There were a couple of interesting looking taquerias, a line of small-time used-car dealers, and some place, little more than a shack, with a peeling sign that read:
Minnows
Worms
Picnic Supplies
Now, I know about a weekend fishing trip and how those things go together… this is Texas… but still….
One of my favorite musical groups, the E-Flat Porch Band, is from McKinney. Ever heard them? I came across them at the Kerrville Folk Festival years ago. You can hear a music sample on the site I linked.
Am not familiar with them – have to look them up. McKinney is by no means a small town – it’s no surprise that some good folk music comes from there.
If you’ve never seen the very first episode of The Simpsons: Bart and Homer are fishing, and Bart has eaten all the baloney, and Homer is hungry… It wasn’t the Simpsons back then. It was a filler cartoon for an odd British woman’s variety show. Don’t recall the name.
Oh, that was The Tracey Ullman Show. I was a huge fan of Tracey Ullman and watched every episode. I looked back on one the other day – it was surprising how crude The Simpsons were drawn on there. You could tell right away that there was some real talent and insight, though.
